This work, commissioned by Socrates Sculpture Park for the exhibition STATE FAIR, suggests an unlikely crossover between the dry semantics of historical conceptual art and the realm of popular American rural entertainment. More specifically, it takes as a launching point a seminal work from 1968 by the artist Joseph Kosuth, in which that artist presented a partial taxonomy of all things and conditions within the universe (including the universe itself). More Matter in General posits a continuation of that universal taxonomy—one that is specific to the signature delicacies offered by state fair food vendors.
